Mustard Seed Project

A COLLABORATIVE MINISTRY OF THE PEACEBUILDING INSTITUTE
FOR THE FUNDING OF WORKS OF PEACE AND JUSTICE WORLDWIDE

Mustard Seed Projects are a wide variety of projects and activities in countries around the world that have been initiated by persons indigenous to the countries in which the projects are taking place.  These projects must meet several criteria:

(1) They must be locally initiated and locally administered.  Who can better know the needs of a given area or situation than the persons who live and work within the area and, in many instances, are personally affected by the needs they are addressing?

(2) The recipients of Mustard Seed financial support must be willing to give a detailed account of how the monies received are spent, first by providing PI with a detailed account of the needs of their particular project or activity, and later, by providing detailed financial accounting of how the provided funds were spent.  Where possible PI also seeks additional verification from independent witnesses and from firsthand observation of the projects supported.

(3) The projects and activities must contribute in some significant way to issues of peace and justice and the eradication of the roots of violence in the targeted areas. They may include educational projects, humanitarian relief, refugee and other displaced persons rehabilitation, restorative justice projects, economic and gender issues, and reconciliation activities.  The PI Mustard Seed Project Committee chooses the projects after accumulation of as much data as possible about each individual project or activity.

(4) Priority consideration is given to projects, individuals or ministries that do not have a sophisticated fund raising program already in place.

Peacebuilding Institute has no general fund from which to withdraw funds for specific projects.  It is dependent on the compassion and generosity of many individual contributors to meet the funding requests of designated recipients.  It guarantees that no less than 90% of all funds received will go to the projects and activities for which the contributed funds are designated.  The 10% reserved for administrative costs include charges for electronic bank transfer of funds and costs accrued in the verification of the legitimacy of projects for which the funding is requested.

Contributors will receive a detailed year-end accounting of the total amount of funds received and their distribution.  In addition, each contributor will receive a year-end statement of his or her contribution and the amount forwarded to the designated project or activity.  The following pages list projects for which funding is currently being sought.  For additional information about each current project, go to the “Roster of Approved Mustard Seed Projects,” or send an email using the Contact button on this website with your specific questions.
